In Holy Fools, I took the image fashioned by idle hands, the filtered likeness made smooth and pleasing to the eye, and cast it before the furnace of strange and fearful visions. And the image was returned unto me altered; the smile was widened beyond mirth, the flesh became as troubled earth, and unclean creatures stirred in the shadows of my own countenance.
For we have made unto ourselves new idols of light and glass, and we bow before them daily; yet when the veil is lifted, the face we offer up is weighed, and found to be both holy and foolish in the sight of the machine.
